In a great article posted today on Gigaom.com titled “10 ways companies are using Hadoop to do more than serve ads”, Apixio Inc.’s use of this platform has been mentioned under the topic of Health Care.

“Health care. I suspect there are many ways Hadoop can benefit health care practitioners, but one of them goes back to its search roots. Last year, I profiled Apixio, which uses Hadoop to power its service that leverages semantic analysis to provide doctors, nurses and others more-relevant answers to their questions about patients’ health,” writes Harris.

Hadoop enables Apixio's CKX (Clinical Knowledge Exchange) platform to simultaneously index, metatag and mine the complete longitudinal charts of patients and then serve up, in real time, the knowledge that is most relevant to care quality, patient outcomes and reimbursement. Hadoop's highly elastic, parallel processing environment is ideal for running Apixio's Big Data algorithms to deliver results that are unique in healthcare.
